Attention! Contaminated PMU Inks and Pigments Have Been Recalled by Manufacturers

PMU Artists Should Be Aware of These Contaminated Tattoo Inks

We know that the safety of your clients is your primary concern and the best way to guarantee that is by using the safest and highest quality products. A recent warning from the FDA advises both PMU artists and consumers to avoid using cosmetic tattoo inks that have been recalled due to contamination.

What’s In the Ink?

Tattoo inks from certain brands have been contaminated by bacteria. These microorganisms could cause serious injury when deposited into the skin. Once the skin barrier is broken, infections could occur due to exposure from these inks.

Look Out for These Symptoms

Rashes or lesions may occur in the area where the contaminated tattoo ink has been applied. You may also notice red papule and they may cause discomfort, itching, or some pain. What some people may find most concerning is that these reactions could lead to permanent scarring so it’s very important to avoid them as much as possible.

Recognizing the Real Cause of the Symptoms

One tricky part of determining whether these symptoms are in fact, infection, is that they are similar to allergic reactions which may not necessarily be due to the contaminated inks. If a client experiences these symptoms and was not exposed to the inks included in the list, it may just be an allergic reaction or a different issue entirely. It’s important to determine the real cause of the skin reaction in order to recommend the most effective treatment.

Products Included in the List

The inks that have been recalled due to contamination of microorganisms include the basic black tattoo inks manufactured by Scalp Aesthetics (also known as SCALPA). There are plenty of them including the Scalpaink SC and Scalpaink AL, among others. (all lots distributed from 8/6/2018 thru 10/1/2018)Black tattoo inks from Dynamic Color Inc. (lots 12024090 and 12026090) are also reported to have been contaminated as well as the Solid Ink Diablo (lot 10.19.18) by Color Art Inc. It’s best to refrain using these products with referenced lot numbers.
